Allahabad High Court: Observing that conviction cannot be based on suspicion, the Allahabad High Court has acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, parents of Aarushi of the charge of murder, giving them the benefit of doubt. The Court held that there was no chain of evidence and they could not be convicted on mere suspicion. CBI had failed to prove “guilt beyond reasonable doubt”.
The appellants had challenged their conviction for the murder of their teenage daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, for which they were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special Central Bureau of Investigation Court in Ghaziabad in November 2013. They were also convicted of destruction of evidence with common intent, while Rajesh Talwar was additionally convicted of giving false statement to police.
