Punjab and Haryana High Court: Arun Monga, J., directed the Education Secretary and the State of Punjab to file an affidavit for steps proposed to be taken in order to have a more dignified designation for teachers in place of Master or Mistress.
Court noticed an advertisement wherein nomenclature “Mistress” for the female teachers to be appointed in school has been used.
In an earlier Order passed in CWP No. 9939 of 2014, Court had placed a query as to:
why can there not be a more dignified designation viz. a teacher or school teacher, who can be further sub-specified as English teacher, Mathematic Teacher, History Teacher and likewise instead of the usage of words ” Master or Mistress”?
To the above it was stated that notice qua change of nomenclature/designation was issued to the State of Haryana as the said CWP pertained to Haryana.
Court further on to the said discussion directed the Secretary of Education Department, State of Punjab to file a separate specific affidavit as to what steps can be and/or are proposed to be taken, in accordance with law, for change of designation as noted above.
Matter was adjourned to 13-07-2020. [Maan Singh v. State of Punjab, 2020 SCC OnLine P&H 804 , decided on 18-06-2020]
