Jusitce Subrata Talukdar, judge of the Calcutta High Court was the first to enlighten the students of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences about the ‘restrictions on Freedom of Speech and Expression’ wherein he mentioned in his discussion the attempts of the government to often overstep the right it has been granted via the Constitution. He discussed many of the cases which have delved into this area. In addition another important guest speaker was Mr. Amarta Ghosh which was in pursuance with the agenda of freedom of speech. It was with regards to “Recent Controversies like AIB Roast, Charlie Hebdo Incident, etc”. The speaker is a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court and is a distinguished personality in the area of Criminal Law and right to freedom of speech. He professes complete freedom and has been active in receiving pro bono matters in the same as well. Both the speakers propagated the agenda of free speech. In the light of the recent controversies it was enlightening for the law students to hear the history as well as the course of action one must adopt in fighting the archaic system of restraining someone.
A brief about Hon’ble Justice Subrata Talukdar: Graduated with Political Science from the then Presidency College, Kolkata. Did his Post-graduation on International Relations from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Worked as Journalist for ‘The Telegraph’, Kolkata; ‘The Economic Times’, Kolkata; ‘The Statesman’, New Delhi and ‘The Hindu’, New Delhi. Obtained his law degeree from Delhi University. Enrolled as an Advocate of the Calcutta High Court on April 17, 1989. Practised primarily on the Constitutional and Civil sides with emphasis on Service and Arbitration matters in the High Court at Calcutta as well as other High Courts, the Supreme Court of India and the Central and State Administrative Tribunals. Obtained Diploma in Cyber Law. Was Associate Editor of the Calcutta High Court Notes. Appointed as Senior State Government Advocate; Counsel for Calcutta High Court; Counsel, Eastern Railway, Metro Railway and Damodar Valley Corporation. Appointed as Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court on October 30, 2013.
