The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and ILS Law College, Pune in association with Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Nanipalkhivala Arbitration Centre, organised a two-day National Conference on International and Domestic Arbitration on the 26th and 27th of August, 2016. Eastern Book Company and SCC Online were the Knowledge Partners for the event. Conference Kit to all the participants were provided by Eastern Book Company.
The conference was the first of its kind to be held in a law college with a turnover of above 360 students and professionals. The contemporary legal eagles graced the conference with their presence. The conference had a blend of domestic and international topics and an in depth analysis of various issues like confidentiality and transparency in international arbitration, judicial intervention in arbitration, future of arbitration in India, and the like was done by the esteemed panel of speakers.
The Conference was inaugurated by Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, former Chief Justice of India. The first session dealt with confidentiality and transparency in international commercial arbitration with Mr. Tejas Karia, Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Ms. Neeti Sachdeva, Secretary General, Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration as panelists. This was followed by session on Arbitrating International Intellectual Property Disputes with Mr. Sahil Kanuga, Senior Associate, Nishith Desai and Associates and Mr. Murali Neelkanthan from Amicus as panelists. The last session for the day was on Investment Arbitration from Indian Perspective and the panelists for the session were Mr. Pranav Mago, South Asia head, Singapore International Arbitration Centre and Mr. Rishab Gupta, Counsel, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas.
The second day began with suggestions as to make India a better seat for arbitration by Ms. Indu Malhotra, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Mr. S.K. Singh, Partner, A.K. Singh & Co. This was followed by the session on Judicial Intervention in Arbitration in India with Mr. S.K. Singh and Mr. Janak Dwarkadas as speakers for the session. The last session on analysis of the recent amendments to Arbitration law in India and the panelists for the session were Mr. George Pothan, Advocate and Consultant, Ministry of External Affairs and Mr. Abhinav Bhushan, South Asia Head, ICC. Justice Mukundakam Sharma, Former Judge, Supreme Court delivered the Valedictory Address for the Conference. In addition to the panelists, there were student presenters in every session.
