As reported by The Hindu, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has stayed the operation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulations of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017 notified by the Central Government on May 23, 2017, banning the sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter in animal/livestock markets.
Hearing a PIL challenging the constitutional validity of the Rules, the Division Bench of Justices M.V. Muralidaran and C.V. Karthikeyan issued notice to the State and Central Governments.
