About Najma Akhtar: Najma Akhtar is a Gold Medalist from Aligarh Muslim University She has done her Ph.D. (Education) from Kurukshetra University; has been Commonwealth Fellow for University Administration Course at University of Warwick and Nottingham; and trained at the International Institute of Educational Planning (IIEP), UNESCO, Paris. She was in the Faculty; Controller of Examinations and Admissions and Director, Academic Programme at Aligarh Muslim University; DEP-DPEP IGNOU. Founder Director, State Institute of Educational Management and Training (SIEMAT), Uttar Pradesh. She has authored two prestigious books and contributed several book chapters and research papers throughout her journey. She has led international consultancy programmes supported by DANIDA, UNFPA, UNICEF, including the prestigious NIEPA-Nepal Project.
She also specializes in institution building; educational administration and management, distance education, education of minority and educational decentralization. The New Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia: The President of India, in his capacity as the Visitor of the Jamia Millia Islamia has appointed Prof. Najma Akhtar as the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. A widely acclaimed educationist, Professor Akhtar is the first lady Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, as also the first lady Vice Chancellor of any central universities in Delhi, not only this, with Najma Ali Heptulla (Governor of Manipur) being the Chancellor of the University, the university’s two highest posts are occupied by female representatives, it is obviously a rare sight to see in this male dominant society. It is a progressive land mark in the history of educational leadership and a matter of pride for Jamia Millia Islamia. The whole JMI fraternity accorded a warm welcome to the decision, and assured of sincere cooperation. They showed cheerful expectations of positive progress in various disciplines and areas of learning and knowledge.Professor is known for her remarkable achievements and innovation in educational governance, be it completing bound targets plans or handling a university’s rules and regulations firmly with complete transparency. She is known for bringing national and international assignments and projects for the students of the numerous universities that she has been a part of till date.
Gender Equity has been part of most of her projects. Her personal charisma clubbed with professional acumen in Institution Building makes a perfect combination for excellence in education. Under her able leadership JMI may expand, prosper and provide safe and robust environment of learning attracting the talented from all parts of the country and abroad. The realization of the goal of massification of Professional Higher Education, and achievement of other national educational targets of GER, SDG goals and opening of new professional courses is also on the cards. Jamia Millia Islamia , under the new Leadership ,will strive to achieve the status of one of the World Class Universities.
