Former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP today at 11 am.
Earlier on 16-03-2020, President had nominated Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated members.
S.O. 1120(E).—Whereas the President, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, has nominated one member to the Council of States to fill the seat of one nominated member in that House who has retired on the expiration of his term of office;
Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 71 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (43 of 1951), the name of the following member nominated by the President is hereby notified for general information:-
1. Shri Ranjan Gogoi
Justice Ranjan Gogoi had a tenure of about 13 months, till 17-11-2019, as the 46th Chief Justice of India.
- Born on 18th November, 1954.
- Joined the Bar in 1978.
- Practised mainly in the Gauhati High Court.
- Appointed as Permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court on 28-02-2001.
- Transferred to Punjab & Haryana High Court on 09-09-2010.
- Appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court on 12-02-2011.
- Elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on 23-04-2012.
