About the Competition
The NUJS Mediation Competition is the flagship event of the ADR Society of NUJS, Kolkata, one of the premier National Law Universities in India. Each year since 2019, the competition has garnered participation from prestigious universities not just across the country, but on a global level, from countries such as the United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Singapore, Pakistan and many more. In 2021, the competition was a qualifier from the prestigious International Mediation Singapore, hosted by SIMI, the Singapore International Mediation Institute. This year, the competition is even bigger, and even better. With collaborations with top-tier law firms and chambers in India, and the best of the best of those in the profession in both India and abroad, it promises to be a glorious experience, at the end of which lies cash prizes, and exciting internship opportunities!
Format: The Competition will be held over Zoom/Google Meet, details of which shall be provided closer to the date. There shall be two preliminary rounds followed by quarter finals, semi-finals, and finals. As of now, each University can send only one team consisting of three members. However, should there be empty slots after the initial round of registration is complete, applications shall be considered for a second team from the participating universities. The universities may indicate via mail their interest in sending more than 1 team. The selection of the second team is therefore contingent on the availability of slots.
The three members of the team should be divided into the following two sub-teams – a Negotiating Team, comprising two members who shall play the roles of client and counsel, and a single Mediator.
The Negotiating Teams and Mediators from each University would compete separately, and breaks too would be separate. Each round shall therefore be a mediated negotiation, with two negotiating teams and two mediators. Teams may also be accompanied by a maximum of 1 coach.
Eligibility: Any student pursuing their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in law/business or allied subjects is eligible to participate in the competition.
Registration: There are two steps to the registration process for the competition, the application and the selection. The application has to be made via the form attached here. After the deadline of the last date for application, the 36 selected teams will be intimated and thereafter requested to complete the registration process to confirm their slot. Selection shall be made on the basis of the ADR achievements and curriculum of the participating teams and universities.
Registration fees is set at ₹7,500 Per Team for National Teams, and 165 USD for international teams post the Early Bird Deadline.
