The Centre for Constitutional Law, NUSRL, with EBC-SCC OnLine is organising a webinar to commemorate Professor Ronald Dworkin on 16 May, 2022 at 11 AM. The esteemed Guest Speaker of the Webinar would be renowned legal scholar, Professor Upendra Baxi, Emeritus Professor of Law, University of Delhi and Warwick. The webinar is titled as “Celebrating Ronald Dworkin: Moral Reading of the Indian Constitution” and will be conducted on Google Meet. About the Organizers
The National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi (NUSRL) was established by Act No. 4 of Jharkhand State Assembly in 2010. The University has subsequently been recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) in September 2011 u/s 22, u/s 12B in the year 2018 of the UGC Act of 1956 and Bar Council of India (BCI). At present, the University has more than 600 students on rolls in the undergraduate course. The University has been included as a member of the CLAT w.e.f. CLAT 2012. At the undergraduate level, University offers Five-year Integrated B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree Program which consists of ten semesters. The University also started its Research Program in January 2012. The Law School regularly conducts various competitions (moot courts, debates, essay writing, legislation drafting, quizzes etc. at national level), conferences and seminars at both national and international Levels.
The Centre for Constitutional Law (CCL) was established in 2022. Dr. Rabindra Pathak is the faculty convener of the centre. The centre works towards the development of research and awareness in the field of constitutional law. At present, the centre has over 60 active members. The centre plans to organise several events to promote academic endeavours and discussions in the field of constitutional law. The centre is currently working on organizing a Fortnite debate competition in NUSRL on the latest developments in the area of constitutional law.
About Ronald Dworkin
Ronald Myles Dworkin FBA QC was an American philosopher, jurist, and scholar of United States constitutional law. At the time of his death, he was Frank Henry Sommer Professor of Law and Philosophy at New York University and Professor of Jurisprudence at University College London. Dworkin had taught previously at Yale Law School and the University of Oxford, where he was the Professor of Jurisprudence, successor to renowned philosopher H. L. A. Hart. An influential contributor to both philosophy of law and political philosophy, Dworkin received the 2007 Holberg International Memorial Prize in the Humanities for “his pioneering scholarly work” of “worldwide impact.” According to a survey in The Journal of Legal Studies, Dworkin was the second most-cited American legal scholar of the twentieth century. After his death, the Harvard legal scholar Cass Sunstein said Dworkin was “one of the most important legal philosophers of the last 100 years. He may well head the list.”
About the Guest Speaker
Professor Upendra Baxi is a legal scholar, since 1996 professor of law in development at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. He is presently a Research Professor of Law and Distinguished Scholar in Public Law and Jurisprudence at the Jindal Global Law School, OP Jindal Global University. Professor Baxi began his law teaching career in the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law at Sydney Law School (1969-1973), and served as a Professor of Law at the University of Delhi (1973-1996.) He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University (1990- 1994), as well as the Vice-Chancellor, University of South Gujarat, Surat (1982-1985), the Honorary Director (Research) of the Indian Law Institute (1885-1988), and the President of the Indian Society of International Law (1992-1995. In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, by the Government of India.
