“Information is not knowledge, the only source of knowledge is experience to gain wisdom” and therefore Mr. Sumeet Malik who is one of the most experienced and qualified advocates was invited for imparting legal wisdom in special lecture organized by UILS on “Intricacies of Legal Research” on 21st September 2022 at 3 P.M. in the Moot Court Hall of the Institute. The lecture, which was attended by around 120 students, opened with the welcome address by Dr. Pushpinder Kaur, Associate Professor, University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
This special lecture focused on learning the basics of legal research which is a major skill to be learnt at a law school. The programme started with the essential question of significance of law in day- to day life. Whether buying a parking ticket or getting a receipt at a departmental store we can’t free our hands from the parameters of law as it proves to be prevalent and alive in every aspect of our life from earning livelihood or entering into a marriage.
The larger portion of the audience constituted 1st and 2nd year in order to keep their enthusiasm up and to make them aware about the legal nuances of law school. Here, SCC Online- EBC arose to the occasion and enlightened the students in the most desirable way possible.
To dice further into the legal world, sources of law were deliberated by the hon’ble speaker. Students were eager to learn about the various types of legal publication and therefore important ingredients common to any published report were illustrated. In his dignified approach, Sir kept the students engaged by discussing various legal propositions which culminated the foundation of thinking like a lawyer.
It was advised that students while conducting their research for moot court competitions, research papers etc. should not only rely on the headnotes provided by the SCC they should read the whole of the judgement in order to properly analyze what went into the case going by the saying “there is no shortcut to success” the hon’ble speaker taught the students to become open minded and a well-informed hard-worker to achieve heights in the career of law.
By the end of the session the 4 most interactive students were felicitated with EBC published books as a token of encouragement. By the virtue of this knowledgeable session the students came up with many interesting questions and the hon’ble speaker responded to each one of their queries in a very cheerful and effective manner.
The programme wrapped up with Ms. Achintaya Soni, Student Ambassador representing UILS, PU at EBC- SCC Online delivering a vote of thanks to everyone involved in the successful organizing of the successful event and Sir, for devoting his valuable time and efforts. The Hon’ble speaker and his team was appaulsed with a green sapling as a gesture of courtesy by Ms. Shefali Singh, Faculty coordinator for organizing the lecture.
Being an illuminating and explanatory seminar, students had their greatest concentration and involvement possible. The speaker made the students realize that they need to “start thinking like a lawyer” the very day they enter the law school and not wait till the competition of their 5-year degree. It was indeed a knowledgeable and an insightful session.
